General notes

Accrington House was built by Jonathan Peel - brother of the first Sir Robert Peel - towards the end of the eighteenth century. The site of the house was the upper part of Oswald Street and the lower part of Spencer Street, and the park extended from Plantation Street to Burnley Road and Abbey Street, with Avenue Parade as the principle carriage drive to the house.
Jonathan Peel built Peel Street as a private road from Accrington House to St. James church with iron gates at the top of what is now Peel Street. Those gates are still in existence.
The second Jonathan Peel left Accrington House about 1849 when he built Knowlmere Manor near Slaidburn, and the house was then occupied by several tenants until it was demolished in 1889.
