Mr. (Captain) Riley 4th left standing, Mr. Cliffe 3rd right, standing. Henry Davison Riley was born on 22nd February 1881 in Preston, the son of William John and Annie Eliza Riley. Riley was educated at Shrewsbury School (1895-8) before joining the family firm of W. & A. Riley, fancy cloth manufacturers, of Houlker Street Mill, Colne. He founded the Burnley Lads' Club around 1901with the motto "Dare all except Dishonour". When he was commissioned in WW1 many of the Lads joined up too in the Accrington Pals. He was killed in action on 1st July 1916 on the opening day of the Somme offensive. Mr. Cliffe became the next leader of the Burnley Lads Club.
