Located next to the Bay Horse Hotel, on the left, and a grocers on the right, which was replaced in the mid 1890s, by Stead and Simpson Boot and Shoe shop, and dating from possibly the 1830s, the pub was rebuilt in a much more elaborate style in the 1880s. It closed in 1958, and was demolished. Burnley Express 5th March 1887, page 6, reported that during rebuilding work, being then undertaken by Charles Parsons, a local architect, workmen employed by Geo. Cudworth, the contractor whilst excavating the back premises, discovered a tombstone buried 5 or 6 feet below ground level. The stone was that of "Margaret Parker, died 22 April aged 52." The stone was carefully removed and placed on display in a room in the pub, where it proved of great interest to local historians. No human remains were found. However a bronze coin was found, and was to be put on display, offers to buy it having been firmly rejected. The absence of overhead cables would indicate that steam trams were in operation.
