General notes
In a letter archived with the photo, prompted by it appearing in the Burnley Express of 24.6.1988 a reader wrote to say that in later years she and her husband had led the class "for a few happy years". The Group met every Tuesday with a service at the church then located in Yorkshire Street. The letter described "happy years of fellowship" where some of "the ladies had a welcome holiday" and identified some of the ladies: Front L-R Mrs Harrison, Mrs. Wallace, Miss Dugdale, Sarah Ann Kenyon, Mrs. J.R. Robertson (Minister's wife), Mrs. Sarah Crowther (remaining two ladies unknown). 2nd Row L-R third Mrs. Cragg, Fourth Mrs. Warrender 3rd Row L-R first Mrs. Cottam. J.D. Robertson was minister at Sion between 1905 and 1924, his wife was so highly regarded by the ladies of the Tuesday club that in September 1919 they presented her with a gold wrist watch, Mrs. Kenyon saying she was like a mother to them. (Burnley Express 27.9.19 p. 4) She is wearing a wrist watch quite prominently in this photo but the date is not confirmed. Sion Baptist Church was opened in 1863 on Yorkshire Street and demolished ca. 1959 to make way for the Keirby Development . The church re-located to a new building, its present home, on Church Street.
