General notes
Swanside Beck runs broadly parallel to the road between Downham an Rimington, and to the railway between Clitheroe and Hellifield. Sometimes known locally as Swanside Roman Bridge, it was in fact built in the 16th century by the monks of Sawley Abbey as part of the packhorse road to Whalley Abbey. The Roman connection is in the style of the bridge and the number of Roman roads in the vicinity. There is nothing to justify the name Swanside but evidence suggests it was originally called Swainside as the monks bought the land from a man called Swain.
