General notes
"St Anton's Cage", in the left foreground in this image, was built as the family pew of the Nowell family of Read Hall. The evidence suggests not was first created c. 1534 and enlarged/remodelled in 1610 and 1697. In the early 19th Century its ownership was hotly disputed by the Fort and Taylor families leading to a judgement in the Diocesan Court that the pew be divided in 1830. Both families preferred to mark their own arrangements and the pew was not used thereafter.
The gallery holds the organ, dating from 1727, was bought from Lancaster Priory in 1813 for 300 guineas.
