General notes
Originally built in the early 1600's, there were a number of alterations and an extension added in the 1800's. Around this time it was home to George Slater, a powerful player in the local cotton industry who owned Sandygate Mill. In the latter half of the 20th century Clifton House was converted into a pub called the Malt Shovel. This closed in 2009 and it reverted back to a residential property.
