General notes
The former Anglican Church of St. John the Baptist was located in a triangle of land created by Gannow Lane, Woodbine Road and Adamson Street. Building work commenced in 1880 and was completed in 1892. Over the next 15 years the streets of terraced houses seen in the picture sprang up around it. After the demolition of a large swathe of the Gannow area during the construction of the nearby motorway, there was a significant dip in attendances. This, along with the growing maintenance costs, led to its closure and subsequent demolition in 1984.
