Thompson Park opened on the 16th July 1930. It was funded by the Thompson bequest and designed by Arthur Race. It was more ornamental than Burnley's other parks containing amongst other things, an Italian garden, a range of flower beds and the very popular boating lake.

Here we can see workmen laying the foundations of the boating lake, just over a year before it was opened.
