General notes
The photograph on this postcard first appeared in the Nelson Leader on the 9th October with an accompanying article on their plight. The heading under the photograph in the paper reads "The refugees are seated on the front row and three are standing behind. To the right on the second row are several Belgian ladies who are staying at Colne and Burnley. The rest are the local committee. some of the horrors through which these refugees have passed are recounted in the letterpress accompanying the photograph". The refugees were housed at the now demolished St. George's Convent.
