Twenty-seven crewmen in all perished in the attempt to rescue the stricken barque, "Mexico of Hamburg" on December 9th, 1886. The postcard is addressed to Mr (or Mrs.) Floyd, Middleton Junction, near Manchester. The message reads: "Dear Mr. (or Mrs. Floyd), So sorry I could not go to the meeting with you and Mr.Floyd. Many thanks for thinking of me. I tried to get to ???? Junction to see you before coming but could not manage to, so please excuse me. Yours in haste. Will try & write again Love ??"
