The movement was formed to provide local shops run for the benefit of the local residents. By buying in bulk, they were able to guarantee low prices and quality of produce.
The Nelson headquarters were at 1-3 Cross Street and managed 32 stores in Nelson, selling all forms of goods from meat to coal.
With part of their profits they opened public buildings such as reading rooms and halls.
In 1960 it became part of the CRS (Co-operative Retail service)
In 1969 the majority of these stores were relocated to the new department store in the Arndale Centre, but this was not a long term success, and it closed on 6th June 1998, ending the Co-op's representation in Nelson.
