General notes
Reputedly one of the most picturesque villages in Lancashire, if not in England, Downham is little changed from the time this photograph was taken at the beginning of the 20th century. The village is owned by the Assheton Estate who keep it unspoilt. There are no road signs or speed limits and no television aerials or satellite dishes, instead the estate cables the services from a remote site into each house. The village is popular with visitors who enjoy the scenery, St Leonard's Church, the Assheton Arms and feed the ducks in the stream at the bottom of the road in this photograph.
