Jonathan Peel, Robert Peel
The house was built in about 1800 by the first Jonathan Peel and was situated on what is now Oswald Street, with its enclosed grounds being situated in the area now covered by Washington Street, Bold Street, Cedar Street, Stanley Street and Avenue Parade. At the time of building it was one of the largest and finest houses in the district. It was demolished in 1889.
The main carriageway followed the line of Avenue Parade, the main gates being situated at its junction with Abbey Street. Peel Street was built by Jonthan Peel, as a continuation of the drive, to give a direct road from Accrington House to St James Church.
The house was occupied by Jonathan Peel, followed by his son Robert, and then Robert's son Jonathan, who removed from Accrington to Knowlmere near Slaidburn.
After the Peels the house was occupied by Jonathan Barnes, the Rev Featherstone and others.
