Royal Navy Commander W.A.C. Dickson salutes a passing parade during Warship Week. The week was set up by the authorities in Padiham to raise £62,000 in order to adopt the WWII minesweeper/trawler H.M.S. Pearl. Councillor E. Bradshaw, chairman of the council and president of the week stated:

"The British Navy has long been supreme upon the seas, but to maintain that supremacy more and more ships are required. For loyalty and patriotism we in this district stand second to none in the country, and I feel confident that my appeal to you will not be in vain."

Indeed it wasn't. In total the people of Padiham raised the sum of £122,984 6s 6d.

The ship itself was based in Plymouth. In 1945 it was one of a number of ships that liberated the Channel Islands. After the war it was sold and renamed the Westella. In 1959 it was scrapped at a shipyard in Ghent, Belgium.
