There was a Bay Horse Hotel (probably on this site) in 1642 as in that year the wife of Charles Haworth, landlord of the Bay Horse, refused to sign the protestation in the Accrington Chapel (St James Church). In 1660 the Bay Horse was in the occupation of Edward Holmes, it was mentioned as one of two ale houses, the other being the Black Bull in Old Accrington kept by Henry Emmot.
