General notes
In the churchyard of St Wilfrid’s at Halton stands a tall cross (14ft), the lower part of it showing scenes from the Viking story of Sigurd, the dragon slayer. This dates the cross firmly within the Viking age of Lancashire, between 865 and 950. This depiction is the most complete telling of Sigurd’s tale outside of Scandinavia and one of the few remaining pieces of evidence of the Danelaw in Lancashire. The cross was restored in July 1891.
