General notes
From the Derby Daily Telegraph 5 March 1895 BURSTING OF A CANAL NEAR LANCASTER.,SERIOUS DAMAGE. "Late last night the Lancaster and Kendal Canal burst at a point where the work of carrying a new sewer from Hest Bank under its basin was proceeding. The water forced its way through a gap in the embankment about ten yards wide, and before it could be shut off between Lancaster and Carnforth had torn up about 300 yards of Macadamised road to the depth of ten feet and flooded the railway and two miles of land. The mails both north and south were delayed."
