Georg Hackenshmidt, also know as 'The Russian Lion', was an early 20th Century strongman and professional wrestler. Hackenschmidt visited Burnley in January 1903. Performing at the Victoria Opera House, he agreed to pay the sum of £25 to any British wrestler he failed to throw in 15 minutes or £100 should he himself be thrown.
