Leyland Motors 'RAF' type wagon set up as a mobile workshop in Moss Lane, Leyland
Leyland
In 1912 Leyland Motors entered their 3 ton wagon into the War Office vehicle trials along with a smaller 1.5 ton vehicle. Both vehicles were selected for the subsidy scheme, buyers would receive a payment each year on the proviso that the vehicle was kept in good condition and would be available for the War Office to purchase at a premium within 72 hours of the outbreak of war. The 3 ton wagon became the main subsidy vehicle and due to the numbers supplied to the Royal Flying Corp became known as the RAF type. This vehicle is kitted out as a mobile workshop and carried a petrol driven electricity generator to power machinery and lights.
