Photograph of the stretch of canal leading up to the Gannow end of the Gannow Tunnel. On the opposite bank, Capetown Mill can be seen.

A tunnel had to be constructed under the Gannow area of Burnley for the canal to pass through. There was no room for a tow path, so a tug was required to get boats from one end to the other.
