John Turney 1845-1938.
Originally from Nottingham, John lived in Skerton.
He came to Lancaster when he married in 1874 to Julie Marie Redshaw and was a fellmonger*, taking over the business of his wife’s father John Redshaw who had a mill on the banks of the Lune at Skerton.
John was on the committee of the Reform Club, being re elected in 1883.
In 1886 he was on the committee of the John O’ Gaunt Club and helped run their regattas.
1887 he opened the first Skerton Flower and Dog Show.
1888 he was elected to the committee parochial committee of the Rural Sanitary Authority.
The same year he stood for the Skerton’s local representative to the local parliament. From that date on he was involved in local politics becoming a Justice of the Peace and Liberal Candidate. He may also, at some point have been Lancaster Port Commisioner, he also invested in the ill fated Lancaster and District Tramways Company Ltd. He became involved in Street Lighting, Installation of Gas, was Captain of the Cricket Club, Member of the Corporation Fire Brigade Committtee 1893, Chairman of the Baths and Recreation Grounds, and was President of Skerton Football Club.
