General notes
Hacking ferry connected Dinkley to Hurst Green and was used to ferry people across the Ribble where it joins the Calder opposite Hacking Hall (seen in the background). The ferry began operating in 1686 but was not very reliable. The boat illustrated was the Victorian ferry which was replaced in the 1920s. A bigger boat was built in the late 1930s and remained in service until 1955, five years after the present suspension bridge was erected.
