General notes
This is a photograph of the arched entrance to the Temple from the bank below. The building now known as The Temple was built as a summerhouse. It is a grade 2 listed building first registered in 2011. In 1745 Thomas Lister was succeeded by his eldest son, also Thomas Lister (1723 to 1761). He was made the 1st Baron Ribblesdale in 1752. During the course of the 1750's he constructed a number of buildings on the estate including this summerhouse. It is thought he made a tree nursery on Copy Hill in the 1780s and estate records show that a great number of trees were subsequently raised on the estate.
