Burnley
Barden or Byerden Lane dates from the 15th century. It was originally an access road between Holme End (it is possible to make this out in the distance) and Burnley. However, locals started to use it as a thoroughfare to get to Clitheroe. The landowners, the Barcrofts, were unhappy with people using their land as a highway and closed the lane at Pendle Bridge. The lane became better maintained in the late Victorian period as industry spread development to this area of Burnley.
