John Allen was a long serving school attendance officer in Burnley but in his private life was also a respected antiquarian, author and expert on local history and a member of the Literary and Scientific and Literary and Philosophic societies. He died unexpectedly on 4.10.1911 aged 51 and a fund was started by his friends for his widow and 5 children, particularly to ensure that his second son would be able to go to college to train as a teacher, his eldest son already being a teacher.
