General notes
Born in Newbald, East Riding, in 1857, he came to Burnley as a school master at St. Stephen's school in 1877, became headmaster in 1883 and at the time of his death was the longest serving head teacher in Burnley. He was a writer on education, a stalwart of St. Stephen's Church and a Conservative party worker. A prolific novelist, his stories were set locally, some being serialised in the Burnley Express. He died suddenly of heart failure on 22.11. 1915, after suffering from diabetes. A memorial window was dedicated to him in St. Stephen's Church in 1922. (Burnley News 23.6.1915 p 6)
