The Long Deep, River Hodder
Whitewell
The Holder is a relatively shallow river for much of its length, but as it approaches its confluence with the Ribble its dimensions naturally grow. However, it is believed that the name originated from the sense of being in a deep natural cutting, created by the river cliffs on either side and accentuated by the trees growing on them.
