The visit took place on Tuesday 26th July 1926 ( Burnley Express 31.7.1926), members were welcomed by Sir Ughtred Kay-Shuttleworth (centre) and his daughter Lady Rachel, shown round the Hall, with Sir Ughtred recalling what the Hall was like when he was a boy before it was renovated in 1850 by Sir Charles Barry. Refreshments were taken in the Dining Room. Mr. William Thompson gave a vote of thanks which was seconded by Miss L.J. Wood (next to Lady Rachel wearing striped top), former (and first) head mistress of Burnley Girls' High School, and the Society's first, and only, female Vice-President. The Society was formed in 1873, and folded in December 1930, when attendance at the Tuesday lectures had dropped to unsustainable numbers, no young people were interested, preferring to go to the Library to hear the BBC Radio lectures, and as "television will soon take the world by storm as radio has done", the club's time was done.
