General notes
The first building to house the Dr. Shepherd Library, erected in 1797. In 1850 the library was moved to a room of the Harris Institute, at Avenham. From here it was transferred in 1879 to the old premises of the Literary and Philosophical Institution at the corner of Cross Street. Later it was incorporated in the Harris Reference Library, at the time when the Harris Library and Art Gallery was erected. Shepherd Street derives its name from the Library.
