The original small reading room was in the paper mill of Messrs Wiggins, Teape & Co where lectures and classes were held. The new purpose built rooms opened in 1890 were donated by Mr H T Park. There was a reading room, library and billiard room on the ground floor with a lecture room upstairs. The facilities were for men only at a subscription of 1/6 per quarter.
