Nora K. Smith, Author. Born Sheffield 5.2.1889, daughter of Rev. F.R. Smith (author John Ackworth), Nora moved with the family to Burnley in 1909. She became an assistant mistress at Red Lion School from 1910 to 1918 and Todmorden Road School to 1921 before going back to Eccles, where the family had lived previously. A head-teacher at Patricroft Council School, Manchester, her first book, "A Stranger and a Sojourner" was her most successful winning a prize of £1000 in a 1936 competition run by JHodder & Stoughton, open only to teachers, ("schoolmasters") but she only had one more book published. She died in 1961. There is a pamphlet (G3SMI) on her and her father compiled by local historian Ken Spencer in Burnley Library
