Carriere des Chauffours (Quarry of the Lime kiln), in the Oise region, was in use from September 1914 through to 1917 by the French Army and was some 10 km behind the front line for most of the conflict. It served as the headquarters of the 72nd Territorial Infantry Regiment and was also used by units recovering after being in the frontline at places that saw heavy fighting, such as Verdun.
It is most famous for its carvings and it seems that the various units billeted here competed with each other to produce the finest carved monuments, many of which are signed by the soldiers responsible for them (some of whom were probably stone masons in civilian life).
