A photograph of the Gannow end of Gannow Tunnel. Tunnel Street, now demolished runs over the top.

A tunnel had to be constructed under the Gannow area of Burnley for the canal to pass through. There was no room for a tow path, so a tug was required to get boats from one end to the other.
