A small postcard print of a painting of the Culvert, showing the Toll Bar House on the road to Todmorden and Halifax.

The culvert in the picture was constructed in 1796 in order to maintain a road leading eastwards out of Burnley, as the straight mile of the canal created a man made barrier. Over the next century, road transport in Burnley increased and the narrowness of the culvert became a major issue. In 1920 a new culvert was constructed that would enable greater flow of traffic under it, thus alleviating the bottleneck.

The term culvert in this instance is actually a misnomer. A culvert carries water under a roadway, whereas the culvert in Burnley carries the canal over the road.
