The pit was originally sunk in 1876 and remained in operation until the end of 1955. The picture shows the pit head gear on the left. The similar structure on the right was part of the old pumping engine. The shorter chimney on the right is actually 915ft tall. It was sunk in to the ground to provide ventilation for a boiler and haulage engine.
