The Preston Railway Station Sailors and Soldiers Free Buffet was opened in 1915 to meet the needs of men who had made long journeys or who were stranded at night without food or shelter. 300-400 women helped run a 24 hour service to provide food, drink and a bench to sleep on . Money was donated by the public and raised through charitable events.
