General notes

The club was founded in the 1870's and was located on Basnett Street. Its members originally came from the local conservative club and church. The cricket club survived until 1935, when it was taken over by the corporation. The pavilion pictured here was demolished sometime in the 1970s. The bowling club is still in existence today, and is located in newer premises on Abinger Street.
