General notes
Peel Fold was the birthplace of the first Sir Robert Peel, and home of the Peel family. Formerly known as Oldhams Cross, from the family of that name who lived here. Robert Peel, born 1723, at Peel Fold was the founder of the family fortune and it was here that he experimented in calico printing which proved the beginning of the Peels entering the calico printing trade at Brookside Oswaldtwistle, afterwards founded Church Works (Steiners), Oakenshaw and others.
