General notes
A closer view of Waddington Old Hall with the modern wing to the right. The Great Hall stretches from the front of the building to the back, panelled in oak and furnished with a magnificent oak dining table and chairs. The entrance to the "secret staircase" leading to the large room above the Great Hall is hidden behind the panel. King Henry VI used this staircase for his attempted escape when betrayed. He climbed down a ladder from his bedchamber and across the fields to Brungerley where he was captured crossing rhe river by the Hipping Stones. The Monks Room, near the original entrance to the Old Hall is the oldest part of the building probably dating back to the 11th century. It was probably named after the monks travelling between the two great abbeys of Sawley and Whalley.
