General notes
Work on this section of the M65 began in March 1978 and the motorway was opened to traffic in October 1981. In the centre can be seen the gas holder of Brierfield Gas Works. It was built by Henry Tunstill, owner of Brierfield Mills and acquired by Nelson Local Board in 1888. The gas holder is the only remaining structure of the gasworks.
