General notes
Wycoller Hall is listed grade II*, with the earliest parts dating from 1596, with alterations during the following two centuries. The hall was the home of the Cunliffe family until the death of Henry Owen Cunliffe in 1818. Traditionally the hall is seen as the inspiration for Ferndean Manor in Charlotte Bronte's "Jane Eyre". Wycoller also featured in the novels of Halliwell Sutcliffe. This large fireplace was constructed in the main hall during the renovations carried out by Henry Owen Cunliffe in 1774. The purpose of the keyhole shaped opening on the right is unknown, suggestions for its use have included a gun cupboard and a store for wig powder.
