As part of the M65 construction works, the road between Barrowford and Colne needed to be realigned where it crossed the Leeds and Liverpool canal, requiring a new bridge. Work began in April 1986 and the motorway was opened to traffic in September 1988. In the foreground can be seen the sluice control for Barrowford reservoir.
