Re-claiming Bickerstaffe Colliery
Bickerstaffe
Mr. V. A. Coates, Captain L. B. Crickmer, 2nd Lieut G.C.W. Marten
Members of the Territorial Army, Liverpool 508 Squadron, with earth moving equipment work on leveling the spoil heaps on the site of the old Bickerstaffe Colliery. At this time the main spoil heap had already been planted with 16,000 trees, the attention was on the smaller heaps lying between the main heap and the Rainford By-pass. Planting was to follow. The men working on Sundays with 2 bulldozers moved 300 tons of earth per hour watched by County officials and a newsreel cameraman. Mr. Coates, the County Planning Officer, launched the scheme to bring back into use 10,000 acres of this type of lost land across the County.
