The image, said to be from 1914, shows the officers and committee of the Burnley United Temperance Cycling Club, one of the many groups run by the Temperance Society. The Burnley News of 29.1.13 lists the names of all the people elected for that year at the AGM two of whom were Miss Ruth Heap and Mrs. Turner, who may be the ladies shown. Note the buglers, who would use calls on the road so riders knew if they had to stop etc. so as to keep what could be very large groups of riders safe. The headquarters were at Temperance Hall, Parker Lane Burnley.
