The second son of the 14th Duke of Norfolk, b. 1.6.1855, d. 18.5.1947; stood as the Conservative Candidate in the 1880 General Election against the incumbent Peter Rylands, Liberal and lost. He subsequently became M.P. for Chichester 1894-1921, and was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Ireland 1921-22 at the time of partition, being the first Roman Catholic in that office. The Burnley Advertiser espoused his cause and on 27th March 1880 promised each purchaser a "fine engraved portrait" of Lord Edmund as a memento of the election. For a time he was also known as The Viscount Fitzalan of Derwent for purposes of obtaining an inheritance, being unsuccessful, he re-assumed his previous name.
