The view on the photograph show St.Anne's Promenade, with the bandstand and the Lifeboat Monument in the foreground. On 23rd May 1888 the Lifeboat Monument was unveiled in St Annes to commemorate the bravery of the crews of the Laura Janet Lifeboat (the entire crew were lost) and the Eliza Fernley (only two crewman survived). Twenty-seven crewmen in all perished in the attempt to rescue the stricken barque, "Mexico of Hamburg" on December 9th, 1886.
