A photograph of the end of Dawson Square, probably taken in the 1970's. The building to the left hand side was part of the original street, but the cottages that made up the rest of the street were replaced with terraced housing.

Dawson's Square was founded in the 1700's and was named after former local land owner Adam Doweson. It contained nine or ten houses, a shop, a stable and a blacksmith's forge at that time.

Mr Todd started a Sunday School in his house on Dawson Square in 1787, where he taught children to read the Bible. He allowed the children to have a playtime and John Holgate who was a warden at St Peter's Church heard them. He asked if the children would like to take part in a procession to the church and this continued until the start of the 1800's. Over time the number of pupils increased and in 1817 the school was moved to the Old Grammar School where the pupils were taught to write using sand taken from Shorey Bank.
