Born 1890., eldest of three daughters of Fred W Steele a well known Burnley solicitor, and Territorial officer and his wife Alice, Gertrude was a gifted artist and sculptor, regularly winning prizes at Burnley Art School Adult Classes and amateur art exhibitions. She was associated with Burnley Oral and Deaf society, and Burnley Deaf School, being herself hearing/speech impaired ( described in the language of the time as "deaf and dumb" ).
