General notes
Padiham's Memorial Park was built using funds from the Clayton bequest in 1921. The bandstand was constructed as the town's memorial to the men of the town who fell during World War One. However, the poor state of the country's economy in the years after the end of the war meant that construction did not take place until 1927.
A speech given by Dr. Mackenzie (chairman of the memorial committee) at the opening ceremony, declared that "We have got a memorial worthy of the town and worthy of the lads who laid down their lives for us. A memorial which will be useful to future generations and perpetuate the memory of the fallen."
Unfortunately the bandstand did not survive long enough to be enjoyed by many more generations, as it was destroyed by fire in 1956.
